Electronic Funds Transfer
A few years ago Congress passed a law that makes it mandatory for you to receive all of your federal government payments by direct deposit to your financial institution.

Called the Electronic Funds Transfer Expansion Act, it requires that all federal payments, except your IRS refund check, be issued by electronic funds transfer (EFT), a faster, safer, more reliable and convenient way to receive your payments!

It affects anyone who receives:

  • Veteran's Benefits
  • Social Security
  • Federal government /military pensions and salaries
  • Any government payment

If you are a new recipient of federal payments, it is effective immediately. As of January 1, 1999, everyone receiving payments from Uncle Sam has to provide the account information needed to deliver their payments by direct deposit to an institution of their choice.
